pattern: by Lotta Jansdotter, from Simple Sewing
fabric: Indigo linen, with bright mango and light purple geometric lining.
time: three hours, worked over two days
overall: As most people have done, I shortened the brim by 1.5 inches. I can't imagine keeping the original length, as I can barely see out of the hat now. The crown of the hat needed to be reworked as well to lie flat, but it wasn't a hassle and I love the hat now. My pale, pale skin can barely tolerate the summer rays, even in Portland. I also varied the spacing of the topstitching. The free-form stitching suits my style a bit more. A sunhat is nothing without personality. Or any hat, for that matter. The pattern is really straightforward and I do think anyone can make it in a day or two. Lotta's sketches of the pattern steps leave something to be desired, so if you just focus on the written instructions, you'll be fine!
